Jet Plane For Mary - The Story Behind the Band
"It's a huge undertaking when you decide to portray your heroes," explains Jet Plane For Mary founder and manager Greg Fedro. "The music of Peter, Paul & Mary is about tradition, and cause, and the special connection they brought to over three generations. Nobody will ever do it like they did, but I feel that we have the ability to keep the music alive and give fans the opportunity to recreate an earlier time when they might have shared that experience with someone they loved."
"Peter, Paul & Mommy was my first album and at the time, I had no clue who the Trio was, how much they would affect American folk music, nor how much they would come to mean to me in the future. But in 1993, I met someone who knows the Trio personally and is herself a huge fan and she introduced me to the huge breadth of music that Peter, Paul & Mary had recorded. I've never been bitten harder than I was by their music! For the next decade, I was listening to nothing but Peter, Paul & Mary, I started playing the guitar again, and I bought every record the Trio had done (including most of their solo stuff). Every time they came to Texas to perform, I was there with stars in my eyes and the silliest grin on my face. I met Noel Paul Stookey twice, and got Noel and Mary's autographs (Peter, you owe me!) - I just couldn't get enough! And in the back of my mind, I guess I did what every other fan who is a musician does and fantasized about being able to perform their music on stage.
When Mary Travers died in 2009, I knew this was a project that just had to happen. Just like Mary, my own grandmother died of leukemia, so Mary's passing was emotionally tough for me and I felt a need to memorialize her in my own way by forming Jet Plane For Mary. To further that goal, the band has also discussed hosting performances for the families of leukemia patients and planning charitable events for leukemia research fundraising.
I think fans of Peter, Paul & Mary will like our music and enjoy our shows. There is a lot to do ahead, but we're on the right track. I think Mary and the guys would be pleased with what we're trying to do."
